Botulinum toxin, is produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. When a small amount of botulinum toxin is injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract. The effect is that it temporarily weakens or paralyzes muscles to reduce pain and create more comfort for our patients.
Botulinum toxin injections can be used alone to treat certain conditions, or after a surgical procedure to assist in the healing and recovery. Your doctor will strategically inject the muscles surrounding the treatment area, which will cause them to relax. After 3-5 days patients feel the effects of treatment begin.
Botulinum toxin injections can improve quality of life and enhance the self-esteem of our patients. Depending on the condition being treated, patients may see a decrease in ‘spasticity’-related pain, prevention of deformity, or feel more balance between opposing muscles. Injections can last for up to 4 months, with follow up injections scheduled on a regular basis.
