What it is Genu varum (bowed legs)?

Medically referred to as Genu Varum, Bow legs are a condition where the child’s legs are bowed outwards in the standing position. That is, when the ankles are placed together the knees are apart. When misalignment is mild and pain-free, bowed legs are not usually of concern. However, it is possible that bowed legs predispose people to other issues such as pain, osteoarthritis, lateral ankle impingement, and issues associated with excessive loading.

Causes

Bowed legs are commonly seen in infants and can be a natural part of development. Generally, the knees should straighten around age three. After the age of three there maybe be associated conditions that cause Genu Varum. These may include Bone Disease (Rickets or Blount’s disease). Fractures that do not heal properly may also cause Genu Varum.

Blount’s disease is a condition that can occur in toddlers, as well as in adolescents. It affects the growth plates around the knee specifically in the upper part of the shinbone (tibia). The disease causes growth to either slow or stop completely.

Symptoms

  • When the ankles are placed together the knees are apart.
  • Poor foot mechanics such as excess rolling outward of the feet (supination)
  • Lower leg problems
  • Awkward walking pattern
  • Turning in of the feet (intoeing)
  • Discomfort in the hips, knees, and/or ankles (typically seen in older children and adults)
