What is Calcaneo valgus foot (baby)?

It is not uncommon for babies to have calcaneo-valgus feet, where the foot rests in an upward position, touch, or almost touching the tibia. This postural deformity is located at the ankle joint and is noticeable at birth. Though the foot appears to have abnormal positioning, it causes no pain for the baby.

Causes

Calcaneo valgus foot is a common condition caused by tightness in the muscles around the ankle. It is not caused by problems with the bones in their foot but rather is a reflection of the babys foot position in the womb.

Symptoms

  • Present at birth
  • The foot can be brought to a “normal” 90 degrees ankle position
  • The foot rests in an upward position
  • Toes are usually touching the shin
