When joints lose the smooth cartilage surfaces, arthritis can develop. The body responds with inflammation, swelling, and pain. When over the counter medications and conservative treatments for this pain no longer work, a cortisone injection can be an alternative solution to target and reduce inflammation. Cortisone is a strong anti-inflammatory medication that can be effective in treating several conditions.

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Labral tears/hip pain
  • Hip arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Gout
  • Tendinitis
  • Back pain

Cortisone can be injected into the affected joint during an in-office procedure. Our doctors may use imaging systems such as ultrasound or x-ray for more precise injection placement. The medication works to reduce inflammation and relieve pain at the joint. There is no limit in the number of injections patients can receive, however, as the condition worsens, the injections may become less effective.

Results of cortisone shots typically depend on the reason for the treatment. Overall, most patients are happy with their injections and the pain relief it provides. Some people may have immediate pain relief, whereas other may take several days before the cortisone takes full effect. While some patients see the injections work for a few weeks or months, others experience relief for a year or longer.
