Hallux valgus is a frequent deformity of the first metatarsal joint. It occurs particularly in women and is commonly known as “bunions”. It appears as a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. Bunions worsen as we get older and can eventually cause pain and deformity of the other toes as well.
A bunion can be caused by pressure from shoes, particularly when the toe box is constrictive, excess motion at the joint at the base of the first metatarsal, flat-footedness, or it can be genetic problem. Some people have a combination of these “risk factors” that lead to an angled positioning of the big toe toward the outside. Some rotational deformity of the big toe is common as a result of abnormal eccentric muscle pull.
