What is an Acquired Deformity?

An acquired deformity is a change in the normal shape or size of a body part. These kinds of deformities usually happen gradually over longer periods of time. Any bone of the body can be affected, as an acquired deformity can be a result of an injury, infection, arthritis, illness, or tumor. It often affects only one side of the body but can also be bilateral. The conditions may be seen in babies, children and adolescent, or adulthood and are not congenital (ie not present at birth).

Causes

Deformity can be acquired in several ways. For example, it can be due to benign tumors of the bone in patients, for example, with patients who have multiple hereditary exostosis. It can also be a result of injury to the growth plates during development or can occur due to injury causing fracture of the long bones, that do not properly heal (malunion or non-union of the fracture). Partial or complete growth arrest from various infection such as sepsis or osteomyelitis can also cause abnormal development of the bones.

Symptoms

  • Imbalance in limb lengths
  • Pain in joints due to limping
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Loss of function of the affected body part
  • Sometimes a visual deformity can be seen
