What is Mal-union?

When a fracture occurs in the bone the body undergoes a natural healing process to unite the bone segments. A bone is considered healed when it is strong enough to return to normal activities without complications. Depending on many factors, healing a fracture can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 6 months. A malunion happens when the bone heals in an abnormal position. It can cause deformities in length, angulation, rotation, and translation. Most often we see mal-unions in large bones of the limbs such as the femur, tibia, humerus and forearm bones.

Causes

Mal-unions can happen with inadequate fixation of the bone or if the bone healed in a bad position. This can also occur in cases where enough stability is not provided to the bone while healing. Additionally, if a bone is broken or fractured, and proper medical treatment is not obtained, it may heal in an improper position and require correction.

Symptoms

  • Bone that appears bent
  • Impaired function of bone or limb
  • Pain, swelling and tenderness
  • Difficulty weight bearing
  • Pain while the limb is at rest
