Metatarsus adductus is a common forefoot deformity where the bones in the front part of the foot are bent or turned inward, towards the body. The rearfoot and ankle are usually in a normal position. Generally this condition is noticed at birth, though subtle deformity can be overlooked and unnoticed until teenage or adulthood.
A single cause for metatarsus adductus deformity remains unclear, however genetic and environmental factors have been suggested. Muscle imbalances, soft tissue contractions, and abnormal muscle insertions in the foot may contribute to the deformity. The position of the baby in the uterus can also play a role.
